Why do laptops use thermal pads and not direct clamps?

The question has been tormenting me for a long time and I have met many different opinions, but I am sure that there are some quite clear reasons, but I don’t know which ones.
I met that not only that they can be of different thicknesses in a laptop, but also of different consistency-colors. presumably different thermal conductivity.
What comes to my mind is that thermal pads are used because they are able to compress and decompress a little, which would be useful in a laptop when transferring it so that contact is maintained and there are no kinks in the cooling system and excessive pressure on the board ...
It is also possible that the so-called. to. the processor heats the cooling system as much as it can, depending on the load, but if other chips are pressed directly against the CO, then the processor can start heating rather than cooling ...
In general, who knows 100% what and how - please tell me) otherwise you can meet a lot of things - they insert copper plates, foil, coins, some don’t even sweat more thermal paste)
I ordered from artcic (mx-2 mx- 4 they have thermal paste). somehow I tried a thermal pad from their local store from some noname manufacturer - it removes heat worse than the old collapsed field ...
Another question is whether folding in 2-3 layers of thermal pad 0.5 mm thick to achieve 1.5 mm is critical? it is clear that some thermal conductivity is lost, but if you do not professionally repair at home, keep such a supply (of different thicknesses) is a little expensive)
