How to translate js string into xml object?

With the help of AJAX I get a string (typeof=string), but an xml document should have gone.
And in my hands I have a large string with the correct xml content that I need to work with.
Knowledge in js: noob.
Knowledge in xml: oh my god what is it?!
What to do with this string to work with it as an xml object?
