Why does Ubuntu 12.04 take a long time to switch keyboard layouts?

Help to solve the problem - Ubuntu 12.04 takes a long time to switch keyboard layout. As in other systems, I can’t say, but according to my personal feelings, there was no such problem in 10.04. It comes to the point that I erase the word 4 times, because by pressing alt + shift I am sure that the layout has changed, I print, I see what I entered, I erase it and again. And so, until after the change I pause and visually see that the layout has changed. I connected 2 keyboards, both wireless and wired - no change. There are 2 languages in the settings, there are no other layouts. There is no delay for entering characters, only for changing the input language.

Are there no solutions? I heard that I'm not the only one with this problem.

Yes, this problem has been going on for 4 releases or more. I have the same nonsense on 15.10. It seems to be only on 64-bit. But not exactly. It's easier to demolish ibus and use setxkbmap. Yes, it's really easier. And better. And the iBus developer together with Shuttlerot on the count. For the keyboard is the holy of holies, instead of whistles, such as any unity, the bugs would be corrected for the beginning critical ones. Skpsdts.

I installed Ubuntu 18.04 and also noticed lags when switching layouts via Alt + Shift. On 16.04 this was not the case.
I noticed that if you use the standard combination Super + Space, it works faster.
I googled and found this solution: https://askubuntu.com/a/986629/766670
The bottom line is that Alt+Shift is an add. switching method (slow) and the standard one is fast.
Therefore, you can replace the key combination of the standard method with the desired one and the switching will work faster:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source "['<Alt>Shift_L']"
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source-backward "['<Shift>Alt_L']"
