Why are most well-known iron startups (Makerbot, Printrbot, Adafruit) either New York or California?

In fact, it is clear why: all the money of the industry is spinning there. In addition, the obvious "toy" nature of the products of these companies suggests that buyers have enough "extra" money (hobby-oriented startups, it seems to me, are possible only in a strong economy). Am I right? If so, does this mean that, when starting something like this, it is necessary by hook or by crook to mow down like Californians and focus immediately only on the foreign market?
