What is Word.Application and Msxml2.DOMDocument.6.0 and how to create the same?

Maybe someone came across programmatic work with Word, Excel files using MS Word / MS Excel from any PL,
or processed XML / XSLT through Msxml again from any PL, all this through the mechanisms of COM objects.

Actually, my task is to create something like Msxml2 to work with a different type of document.

Are these objects Ole automation? COM object? ActiveX library? type library?
How to actually repeat this?
Where to dig?
