Suitable CPU and RAM for Lenovo WorkStation S20?

Hello.
Colleagues, maybe you can tell me about this issue.
Acquired on the occasion of Lenovo Workstation S20, for understanding - this is a cross between a server and a home PC.
Socket - LGA1366. Now there is no memory and there is a Xeon W53550 processor.
What are my thoughts on this. The RAM size limit in the spec for this workstation is 24 GB. And very interesting, is this a limitation of the processor or the motherboard too. If the former, then it might be worth buying on ebay/or something like a Xeon X5680 that supports 255GB of memory, at the same time I will get more cores/threads and a higher frequency. Since the motherboard does not support overclocking, this is a plus. Also from the advantages of this processor is L3 Cache and the manufacturing process is 32 Nm versus 45.
From the minuses - an additional 70-80 USD per processor.
Since the TDP of these processors is equal, the cooling system can not be changed.
Initially, I wanted to take 6x4GB ECC memory, it costs a penny on ebay.
But if suddenly the 24 GB limit is related to the processor, then it makes sense to buy 6x8GB ECC, but the question is whether the motherboard will see these dice. Googled and looked on the forums, there is little information and it is contradictory. According to the spec - no, the maximum size of a die is 4GB, in total - 24 GB
Plus, in the spec on the motherboard it is written that it supports ECC, but unbuffered.
Perhaps someone will tell you whether it is possible to take registred ECC, it seems to be much cheaper.

PS Do I need extra cores and gigabytes - in general, yes. Initially, the station was taken under the launch of heavy backend applications that my laptop does not pull, plus virtual machines. But in the case of an upgrade, I will use it for computing tasks and I will probably give it to my wife for rendering 3D.

This is just to find out by experience. According to the experience of laptops, it is worth focusing on the parameters of the memory controller, that is, the processor for this generation.
