Should a person with poor eyesight meddle in the IT world?

Background:
The fact is that I am a disabled person with poor eyesight (one eye does not see, the other sees poorly). Now I am studying not at all in the IT specialty, namely the medical college, studying in it will give me a guarantee that I will not be left without a job, even after the deterioration of vision problems. But my soul does not lie at all in medicine, as far as I can remember, only computers have always attracted me.
I am attracted to the development of AI and robots. Childhood dream of writing your own voice assistant.
Dilemma:
Next year I graduate from medical school and the question arises whether to go to university or not.
I would really like to go somewhere for an IT specialty, finish and do what I love. But they try to dissuade me in every possible way from studying at a technical university, and besides, I'm not sure that the university will give me the necessary knowledge. In addition to all the age, at the time of admission I will be 22 years old, the age when many people already receive bachelor's degree certificates.
Question:
Should I meddle in the IT world with such shaky guarantees or remain an ordinary advanced PC user, reading programming books on weekends and trying to write something.

If you have a goal, you need to move towards it. Life is given once, and one must live not for the "crust" but for oneself. If you have a head on your shoulders, then everything else will follow.
By the way, a modern university will give IT 5% of what is needed. Perhaps the theoretical part will give, but as a rule it is not useful in practice. In modern Russian IT, people learn on their own, and become specialists also on their own. The university will not help here.
Yes, vision is a very necessary feature for a modern IT specialist. Unfortunately, it is not forever, and can only get worse. But in any case, getting to know the PC is worth living :). Therefore, I strongly advise you to try yourself in the IT path, at the same time you will always have the choice to work as a doctor or a computer engineer (and a choice is always needed).
I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that you can become the person who can understand the "blind" and be a qualified programmer (or what do you want to become there?), and be a kind of link between the world of the blind and the sighted, promote some their PC-based "solutions" to help the blind interact better with computers. For me, the current solutions in the form of a braille display, and a contrasting OS / web page design theme, as well as assistants for voicing texts, are solutions that are quite obvious, antediluvian, and also not quite user friendly. You may want to change this for the better.

Unfortunately, work in IT itself often becomes the cause of poor vision.
I will not advise anything, but I wish you good luck. Whatever you choose.

I think it's worth it. Life is one, so you need to do what the soul lies to. By choosing this path, even in the most difficult moments, you will be able to find the strength to move on.
As for vision problems, take them only as one of the obstacles on the way to your dream. This is fine. To some extent, this is even good, since overcoming obstacles helps us become stronger.

If you really want to, then enter the Faculty of Cybernetics, but it will be difficult to study. And with proper use of the PC, visual impairment should not be.

I have -6 vision in both eyes, I work and don't worry. Vision does not deteriorate, stabilized

Keep an eye on your monitor's brightness. And breaks too. At least 5-10 minutes every hour.

Maybe you should first think not about who you will work as, but about having an operation on your eyes and taking care of your health?

With a special, sparing mode of work on the computer, regular medical control of vision - of course, go to IT.
