RaspberryPi + HDMA->VGA + 1440x900?

Can't get RaspberryPi to work with 1440x900 monitor via HDMI -> VGA adapter.
I have already tried all possible modes, the picture on the screen appears only when

hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=1

If I ask a raspberry to suggest a suitable HDMI mode through tvservice -m CEA / DMT, I get a whole bunch of modes, including native ones for this monitor, but none of them work.
The information in the monitor menu corresponds to the real settings in config.txt, but the picture is not displayed.

The problem lies somewhere in the resolution, since it only occurs with this resolution (tried different monitors on both 1440 * 900, different raspberries, different distributions of raspbian / mate and HDMI-> VGA adapters)

@mirspo

It didn't work for me without hdmi_force_hotplug through the adapter either. I have the following config:
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=16
hdmi_drive=2
