I thought about this question for a long time. I took the air and have no regrets. More to say - very satisfied.
In general, the question is formulated with a lack of information - it would be necessary to specify the specifics - why do you need a computer.
A few personal thoughts.
- We took three Air 16-256s into the family two months ago. In our family, we have one frontend, one backend, and I am an iOS mobile. For all three of these areas (plus movies/music/Internet/drawing pixelated icons), this computer is simply awesome. I moved from MacBook Pro late 2013, the rest from fresh vintel beeches. Everyone is very happy.
- I consider the absence of Carlson inside the air as a plus. There will be no need to serve. no extra holes. Plus, there are videos on YouTube about how a person put a thermal pad, and the air began to cool better than the firmware.
- Regarding the brightness, which Air has less than the Pro by 100 nits. I would not say that this is a problem-problem from my point of view - on the first retinas it was 250-300 nits, on the pros of 2015 they reached 400 - everyone was shouting what gorgeous screens - and now you see it, whether it’s small and dim. Subjectively - I mostly worked at 60-70% brightness on the old firmware of 2013, and it's the same here.
- Personally, I like the body of the firmware more. Well, a die of equal thickness is somehow more solid than an Eyre wedge. But this is a matter of taste.
- 8 GB of memory do not take. There is not much memory.

Here, of course, one cannot fail to notice that Apple has a little confused with the same processors in all of its laptops.
As far as I read reviews and benchmarks - both laptops show the same results. But, theoretically, the firmware should do air in some particularly expensive tasks, when a more powerful cooling system plays its role.
In addition to this, there are only two significant differences:
1. Touch panel for firmware / function buttons for air
2. 4 ports for firmware and 2 for air.
So if ports and touchbar are not needed - I would take a lighter air, as it is super powerful now.

I would take air: 8GB of RAM for the pro is not enough, I don’t like the touchbar for the pro.
Otherwise, it's plus or minus the same thing.
