Is it worth it to take a steam bath for a prestigious diploma?
Welcome all! This year I'm going to university to study IT. There is a choice between two universities: NRNU MEPhI and the University "Dubna", with the following factors.
MEPhI (evening):
+ a prestigious diploma (which seems to be quoted over the hill and does not need to be confirmed)
- couples end at 22:00 and I will get home at best at 1:30 - 2:00 (or renting housing in Moscow for which all the family will have to work hard)
University "Dubna" Department of ISAU (), full-time:
+ hostel
+ enough free time for work / self-education
+ the opportunity to practice at JINR (), SPC "Dedalus" () and possibly other organizations of the special economic zone.
Conclusion: if you go to MEPhI there will be a lot of crap, which, against the background of the fact that they say that a diploma in it is not important (if only it was), casts strong doubts on entering there. Is it worth it to make so much effort that they would then go to dust. In Dubna, the situation is much more favorable, but the university is called the Institute of the Society of Nature and Man, although there is now more emphasis on physics and computer science and the university is not Moscow, which is also somewhat embarrassing.
The public recommends MEPhI. I would go to Dubna, as there are much fewer problems and rather good opportunities. So does it make sense to get a MIFI degree?
Well, like everything. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I read and marveled at people who do not understand why higher education is needed.
You can study at home, choose a profile and develop yourself as much as you like. But, when studying at the institute, knowledge is given in a systematized and in the correct sequence. Plus, you expand your horizons. You go to this place for fundamental knowledge, not for specific ones. Those. you are going to learn programming in general, not programming for Joomla CMS on PHP version 5.6 on Ubuntu Linux.
Specific knowledge will be useful to you, but it is cheap. Fundamental ones are acquired with difficulty, with some awareness. And higher education is an assistant here. You learn everything and always on your own. Whether you gain knowledge or not is entirely up to you.
In my opinion, you need to choose MEPhI. First, you will have additional motivation to study. You need to try to live up to the expectations of your parents. Secondly, the presence of an evening shift can push you towards employment or the same freelance in your spare time, so get a job in your specialty. MEPhI also has a hostel, you can try to get there. Moreover, the chance of having smart teachers in a decent university is higher than in a regular one, and the environment will be more diligent. Nobody cancels majors, but you should not equal them. At MEPhI you will have an education, a good environment and an international diploma. And when you come to get a job in a good company, with the same level of skills, they will choose you, and not hippies without a diploma.
Of course, many write about their business here. Now it is fashionable to work for yourself. So, when a person comes to an investor who is able to speak the same language with him, who correctly explains and correctly shows the potential of his project and realistic implementation, money comes to him faster. No need to read stories about people like Mark Zuckerberg, they just got lucky. Their implementation just fell into place.
I also quite often see applications written by people without education, who do not understand the basics and are engaged in bicycle construction. Such things are extremely difficult to maintain and are often simply thrown away.
In my short life, I managed to see that education is of great importance. But it is also very important to know how to use it.
PS. Graduated from college and university. He himself learned English, he got a job in the USA. I often use the knowledge gained from college and university. There is no unnecessary knowledge. You never know what situation you'll be in.
Come to Moscow, do not be afraid, everything will pay off handsomely.
A diploma is needed only when it is necessary to open a work visa somewhere abroad, in all other cases, it's just the difference that you attended the university for a certain number of years.
The main thing is what skills you will get there and how relevant they will be.
I think that the current education system is generally 0 ... only self-education can somehow help.
In your case, I would go where there is more free time for self-development and parents should not be strained.
UPD: A diploma will not make you a specialist. The curriculum of any university becomes outdated as soon as you start studying at this institution.
In most universities, you can learn only one useful skill - communication with people and the ability to build relationships.
Unfortunately, many shovels left in their heads - Univer === Excellent work && Korochka === Highly Educated Person, only in this way ... in another way - some "Highly Educated Person" will immediately write how stupid you are.
In any case, go to the university, as I already wrote - you will need a diploma, at least in order to leave the CIS for more developed countries.
And more - Learn English!!
"all of the following is relevant only for most universities in the Russian Federation, for the IT sector, for people who know what they want, and only if you do not consider yourself an infantile hedonist"
People who talk about the need for a diploma do not have the necessary discipline for self-education and also, apparently, believe that knowledge can only be acquired at the university.
It seems that in order to read the right IT book, or open the problem book, they need a frightening, kicking session in a few months.
If you are still interested in my opinion, it is this: every year many universities graduate people with almost identical knowledge, about the same age.
You can do the same. You can go to university like the other 30 people. You can go to lectures every day, like everyone else. Get the same package of knowledge as everyone else. An outdated package of knowledge, which, by the way, will contain a lot of unnecessary items, because the state needs to continue to educate you in the spirit of socialism and patriotism after school. The university will continue to teach you how to take exams, not how to gain knowledge.
You will learn what you are told to learn, you will do what you are told to do, whether you like it or not , with no guarantee that you will need it in life. After 4 years, you, like the rest, will be given a diploma. You are 23, you don't feelnot a drop of confidence in your knowledge, most of which you acquired on your own, you begin to think that you were deceived somewhere, and these 4 years could be spent more productively. Happy viewing , as they say.
You can go the other way. You can not succumb to the general mood and do not go anywhere. (or enroll in a correspondence course if you or your parents still need this piece of paper)
In this case, your knowledge depends only on you . Your success depends only on you. From your discipline, determination, your faith in yourself and in your success. You spend your time only on what you see fit. You do not waste time on the road to the university. Your volume of knowledge in 4 years in this case, from 0 to infinity. Your success and your income will correlate accordingly with your amount of knowledge. And for sure, you will not be like the rest of the graduates. And with a high degree of probability you will be better .
The choice is yours.
If you are planning to get a job (I personally advise you not to work for anyone), do you really want to be valued only for your degree and not for your skill? Personally, I would be disgusted to work in a company that appreciates employees only for pieces of paper, and not for their ability to do something cool.
In terms of IT, the university can give you the maximum - this is:
1. The ability to learn.
It sounds funny, but not everyone knows how to quickly search for information.
2. Basics.
Uni does not make you a specialist. The fact is that IT is developing at a very fast pace, it is very difficult to adapt to this speed, and the basic things are quite constant. Of course, there are teachers who try to adapt the curriculum, but they are in the absolute minority.
3. Crust.
Needed when moving for permanent residence abroad and when applying for a state job. organs. Ordinary employers - deep purple, if you can bring them money - they will definitely hire you.
I studied for 5 years at a Russian university and 5 years abroad, in Germany. So I don't think I'm talking nonsense.
It all depends on your goals. Do you want to become a specialist who is not ashamed to cross the threshold of both large and small companies? Or do you want to start your own business? LEARN SHOULD.
If you want to "code for food" (I'm exaggerating. Peace!) - then you don't need a university, you'll waste your time.
And in your case, I would just tear up the op and try to finish the MEPhI. What for?
1. HR +100. Then someone called the CSF from the diploma he received "soviet garbage." So, on the contrary, I would call the current situation with the degradation of the education system and devalued diplomas rubbish. In Germany, they look at you with different eyes already because you just entered the university.
2. At the university, you will learn (if you finish) to streamline your thoughts, to express them orally and on paper in a language understandable to other specialists.
3. Delve superficially into all the important concepts and technologies, grab the top of knowledge from a variety of domains that a self-taught person would not want to dig up to.
4. As follows from paragraph 3, you will have 5 years to get acquainted with different domains and choose the one that interests you. Otherwise, you may have been tormented by a programmer all your life without knowing that you have a talent in the field of modeling business and IT processes.
5. Without a diploma, there is a good chance of hitting the "ceiling" in 10 years. Especially in foreign companies. An example of this is a German who sits opposite me in the office. He fumbles in his business not like a child and would be glad to already steer projects, but he did not acquire a diploma at the time. Regrets now.
6. Very often, the material taught in universities is called outdated yesterday. It is, but not really. At the university, you will not be taught angular and it is unlikely that you will write mobile applications. But (suddenly) and the idea is not in this. At the university, you will be given a theoretical framework that will help you in the future not only understand how to use angular, but also how not to use it. You will suddenly have an understanding that angular, MVC, .NET, Agile, UML, NoSQL, etc., etc. it's nothing more than a toolkit and it's better to know when to use which tool to get to the final product in the shortest possible way than to be a ninja in any one tool/framework/technology.
7. If you are lucky with the pros, you will hear a lot of tales from the production.
8. If you are even more lucky, then you will meet a person at the university who will become your mentor.
Of course, MEPhI is doing Dubna on all the points described. So decide if you need it or not. If you want to support the trend to get crusts "on the table" - for God's sake. But if you are going to study, then do it without compromise. Yes, if you go to study, and not to serve a number, it will be difficult. Harder than self-taught. But in the end it's worth it, because the price of a diploma for you personally is what exactly you did in order to get it.
And another problem is that there are a lot of stories on the Internet that someone took a book, memorized the material, made their own application, went to work at Google. The catch is that people who took books and fought for weeks, or even months, with windmills and scored again and again, do not tell their stories on the Internet. And most of them are. Everyone knows and understands everything very well - you need to take it, you need to read it, but something goes wrong already at the "JUST DO IT" stage.
Something like that. But, probably, the biggest minus in the absence of a diploma / studying at an average university with the possibility of studying in the TOP is the thought that will creep up every year closer and closer - "What would happen if ..."
MUPOC Dubna. I live nearby, I know many who study at ISAU. In general, they teach well, but a diploma - what's the difference, because all the same, the university will not give up-to-date information regarding technologies that come out and are updated every day. It is necessary to wool everything yourself and on the basis of knowledge there will be further work. It's not always about the diploma. At least in the IT field.
How many people have so many opinions. My opinion is that it's very different. Very differently.
OK. What benefits can a prestigious diploma give? Well, this is obvious - there are more opportunities, namely: it is easier to work, because a prestigious university is clearly quoted a little more often and stronger; more likely to get an education for which you are not ashamed; likely to be more interesting to study; more useful connections. Finally, the thesis will probably be the only serious more or less completed project in the portfolio, which is very, very important. And finally, I don’t want to scare, but my grandmother whispered to me that in unknown universities there is chaos and a mess - bribes, a terrible curriculum, incompetence ...
In general, the choice is simple. If possible, you should always choose the best. But comfort should also be considered in its capabilities. Taking a loan for 25 years for a Lexus while living with your parents in order to give half of the already small salary in a crisis is at least unreasonable. But to take a broken-down nine for the first time in order to throw it anywhere, without fear that it will be stolen, in order to calmly drive along our roads and drive onto the sidewalk, knowing that the chassis should be repaired once a year for a quarter of a monthly salary. Yes, and refuel with the same 92nd, knowing full well that it does not differ from the 95th in any way - now this already looks like a plan. Actually, what I mean is - everything must be done to the best of one's ability and ability. If there is such an opportunity, grab it with both hands. And if not, be content with what you have. Everything has its pluses.
Good luck!
>So does it make sense to get a MIFI diploma?
Yes, I have.
Moscow State University, MEPhI, MIPT, MSTU - gives an advantage, especially when applying to large companies
with a diploma is better than without a diploma
with a profile - better than without a profile,
and if you decide to leave - the same Blucard (Germany) stupidly has a list of universities, with whom they cooperate
and - most importantly - only physicists know the word Dubna, MEPhI know more, therefore the diploma is quoted , teachers and the school of teachers means a lot, in fact - the level strongly depends on the level of the university
if you have the strength - pull it, if you just need a diploma - go stupidly where it's cheaper)
You need a university that will have the right teachers in the right subjects
If you do not have a list of the right subjects, then you do not need a university
Fact #1: You need a degree. The more prestigious the university, the better.
But at the same time, we must remember our favorite saying "Meet by clothes, see off by mind." In other words, a diploma is an analogue of clothes. Wherever you get a job in the future, in your resume, the recruiter's eye will catch on the line with a prestigious university, but in the end you will still have to communicate with a specific and pragmatic techie, who "wields the mind";)
In other words, No one bothers you to develop as a techie and specialist wherever you study. BUT. A more prestigious university will allow you to catch the eye of recruiters more often and thus give you self-confidence. Confidence in a future where you can kick your butt and tell any employer "OK. We've done a good job with you, but it's time to be honored to know"
In a more prestigious university, more professional people.
I'm not talking about quantity. I'm talking about people. Everywhere there are brains and very good brains. But in more prestigious ones they are more common. This suggests that you can begin to rotate among those professionals with whom it will be more pleasant for you to work both during your student days and in the future "working for your uncle."
Among my colleagues and friends, I have both Moscow State University students and Bauman students. They can eat okdan for days, but by God they write like Brian Kernighan. Not a single extra line. Strictly to the point. What if you're asking for advice? You will hear a clear, progmatic and reasoned opinion. Yes, those who studied at a less prestigious one or did not study at all also exist and are even very bossy, but these are exceptions emphasizing the rule.
A couple of times it happened that a major customer asked for all the information about the team before the project. Specifically interested in certificates and diplomas.
A prestigious university is NOT important for an IT specialist.
Just a diploma, that is, higher education, allows you to study some subjects in a relaxed atmosphere that may be useful for understanding the principles of logic, mathematics, and other things (matan, physics (especially the electronics section), a foreign language, and so on.
But naturally you should be interested in these subjects. If you are going to just buy sessions, then it’s easier to buy a diploma right
away.Abroad, higher education is extremely important. In our country, real knowledge is more important, but having a diploma will simplify (does not guarantee!) outsourcing, with a foreign customer.
If you are able not only to study, but also to adapt what you study to modern requirements, that's great. But know that everything that you study at the university is for the most part either the most-very basic or outdated.
Here's how I propose to the author of the question to do:
Talk to MEPhI graduates, find out who got a job where, who does what. Moreover, to find out in general statistics, how many people from the group work in their specialty, who earns how much and actually draw a conclusion whether he sees himself like this in 4-6 years.
It is clear that everything is individual, but this is the temperature in the hospital, which you can focus on, plus another question, will it be comfortable to cook in such an environment for 4-6 years?
Do the same with Dubna and make a decision.
Personally, I’ll tell you about myself, I graduated from a prestigious university in St. Petersburg with a degree in IT, then I thought, in principle, that I don’t need it.
What can I say in the end: out of a group of 16 people (at the daytime) - 13 work as progers, and there is a friend who left for England, there is 1 who goes to the Netherlands, from the neighboring group there is someone who went to Germany. The rest more or less decently earn, work in decent companies. Of those who do not work in their specialty, 1 became a state official + entrepreneur, 1 fitness trainer, and 1 more girl, to be honest, xs what she does.
Now, 2 years later, I understand that there were a large number of talented and smart people at the university (from students on the stream). There were also examples to the contrary. It is up to you to choose with whom to communicate. Although knowledge, I could get everything on my own.
In any case, starting from the second year, it is desirable to already work in the specialty (internships, etc., etc.)
