How to select a layer in a group in Photoshop?

Ctrl+click selects the group itself. All my life I have been tormented by the question of whether there is a way to select any layer that is included in it. Here's the content of the layer in front, here's my mouse, why can't I select it?

Ctrl + left mouse button when layer is not in a group
Ctrl + Alt + right mouse button when layer is in a group (any level)
