How to run a server on the local network to run media files?

Is it possible somehow to start a server on the local network that allowed to view media files?
I can access files, transfer manually or through the usual way a list of files, but when I open video or audio, media is not played. Is there any way to fix this?
I launch via CMD: python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8000or server on NodeJS
