How do I make my MacBook go to sleep when the lid is closed if a second monitor is connected?

At work, I always connect my MacBook to a second monitor (via Thunderbolt, if that matters).
The problem is that I'm already used to moving away from the computer just to close the lid of the MacBook. But when a second monitor is connected, the macbook just starts working only on the connected monitor. That is, the MacBook is not blocked.
How to be?

Turn off the power from the laptop, then it will fall asleep. Or send the laptop to sleep in 2 mouse clicks before closing the lid.
