Has anyone else had problems after updating ubuntu to 11.10?
Given:
Laptop, Emachines E528.
Recently upgraded to ubuntu 11.10 from 11.04.
Also (due to the absence in the basic configuration) I installed Gnome 3 (in fact, it was updated, because before that I used Gnome 2)
Well, the kernel was updated with updates, up to the 3rd version.
Also, the shutdown/reboot/sleep buttons from the active user menu (why???) have disappeared from the new "wonderful" Gnome, although they remained on the login screen.
Problem:
After the updates reboot/hibernate/shutdown from the command line became impossible (standby mode works properly, before this update the laptop had been working properly for half a year in succession Ubuntu 10.04 -> Ubuntu 10.10 -> Ubuntu 11.04).
Namely:
sudo reboot
sudo shutdown now
sudo s2disk // sleep mode The
symptoms are the same - gdm unloads successfully, then a couple of lines on the terminal, more often just a command history. The last time the message that the Apache finished work.
The situation worsened:
Everything would be fine, somehow reconciled. But today, after another failed shutdown via shutdown, only the fan, cd-rom and power light started up in the laptop. The off button didn't work no matter how long I held it.
Shutdown had to be done by pulling out the battery.
Question:
Has anyone else had this?
Can you advise how to fix this, if possible?

I have Ubuntu (it has gone through several updates. Now it’s 11.04. I don’t plan to update until the release of 12.04 LTS). I don’t complain about stability and I don’t advise you to update (though I advise you late).
BIOS visible at boot? Do you have Ubuntu Live (CD/USB)?
Plan: run from CD/USB, see what's in the logs. Based on this, try to repair, backup data. Logs here /var/log/
I also had a situation that the gnomes were chopped off on the laptop, all the processes seemed to be the same. But the laptop still works. I just switched to another console, and once again gave the shutdown command.
If applets and Fast User switching start to knock out, then the gnomes will fail, this is understandable.
And the fact that now the laptop does not start is possible the consequences of such crashes with pulling out the battery. And the laptop started how? He pulled out the battery and turned it on, or just stuck it out and put it in and started working. It was like this on my acer aspire. The laptop just didn’t cut it with a battery inside, even connected to the network. When the battery wears out completely in some laptops, it stupidly stops working.
hibernation works properly from the user menu. but when updating and then ligthdm does not start. Tried deleting gdm but didn't help. As a result, I returned back to gdm. It's on a netbook.
I updated it on my home computer, but there are problems with the video drivers. When using Unity, the brakes happen when switching the screen or rendering new elements - such as the context menu (right mouse button). Clicked, a shade was drawn and you wait 2 seconds until the menu itself appears.
At work, it works stably and without problems.
I started unity on 11.10, which on 11.04 said that the video was too weak and issued gnome2
I always turned it off after sudo halt
))
In general, after upgrading to 11.10, there are no problems.
I had worse. Desktop. Despite all the prohibitions, after about 20 minutes I tried to go into sleep mode, and apparently my motherboard (though Intel) is not supported, and the computer stupidly turned off completely, without saving.
I had to go deep into the kernel configs, turn it off.
But on the other hand, Unity was fixed. On 11.04, it was wildly slow (Radeon 3650) and the video in full screen mode was with a frame rate of 5-10 frames.
