Does the firewall (firewall) need updates?
In search of the "ideal firewall" I came across a bunch of "dead programs" that have not been updated for 3 years. The question arose - "does the firewall need regular updates at all?" After all, this is not an antivirus, it seems that there is no need for any databases, the main function is to block or allow traffic. Nevertheless, I would like to hear the opinion of knowledgeable people - whether updates are needed for the firewall and whether it is worth considering as contenders for use, firewalls for which new versions have stopped coming out or even the office has disappeared altogether. website.

Updates are needed. In the simplest case, if your firewall is just a packet filter (blocks based on IP / port / traffic direction), then it still needs to be updated - there are bugs in the code, the system (OS) on which the firewall works also changes , drivers change, API calls change, and so on. If it is not updated, then at some point it may stop working.
And yes - some firewalls have their own bases, for example, network traffic signatures, based on which the firewall can make additional blocking decisions, even if the connection flies to an allowed port.
