Chains in GMail

Is it possible in GMail to separate a message from a thread into a separate one?
For example, I have a chain of 4 Linked In messages from a single contact. For unknown reasons, a fifth is mixed in there, also through Linked In, but from another person. I would like to be able to take out the fifth in a separate conversation.

It used to be impossible to turn off conversations, and it was hell, but you can turn it off - gmailblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/turn-off-gmails-conversation-view.html
