Gmail tab consumes 700 MB of RAM - why?

Just a permanently open Gmail tab consumes 600MB+ of RAM, of which "Javascript memory" is 350+ MB.

There are no additional plugins or add-ons in chrome itself, the chat is turned off, the appearance is normal. What can be done about it? Already in any gates such a volume, and this feeling is constantly growing.
PS - Added. Found solutions:
1 - marked as a solution = use the basic version of HTML (when updating the Gmail tab at the bottom right, click "Use HTML version", then when loading the tab itself on the top left, you can click "Always use". In my case, 650MB > 260MB while without loss of functionality
2 - installation of RAMMAP (off. free tool from Microsoft) helps as a temporary optimizationand cleaning by items from the menu. I was freed from 14GB of a busy opera almost 4GB, without removing processes, etc.

3 - additionally cleaned the browser cache through CCleaner with Chrome restart. As a result, in general, all chrome began to eat 8GB -> 5GB. Whether only cleaning or restarting also helped - I don’t know, apparently all together. Specifically, the Gmail tab, even in the HTML version, ate 260MB, now it eats 180MB.

This is fine. The problem is the use of polyfills for outdated browsers and general overweight.
I can say that gmail 2018 "lays down" raspberry pi 3b+.

For interest, I checked 300-385 mb shows on gmail, a little less. But all the same, out of a dozen 3 different tabs, it is gmail itself that eats more for some reason.

Ask Google how they got to this point. You can do this with a mail client.
