Are there file fragments smaller than one byte?

I started defragmentation (disk analysis) on windows xp, a list of fragmented files came out. Everything would be fine, if not for one strange fact: SOFTWARE.LOG (which seems to be from the registry) has a size of 1kb, and the number of fragments (!) Is 1185.
How can this be? I would also understand (but I would laugh of course) if there are 1024 fragments (one byte each), but how can 1024 bytes be divided into 1185 fragments ?!
