Are M2 PCIe 3.0 x4 and PCIe x2 compatible?

There is a motherboard with a declared M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 port and one key.
And there is an SSD drive with PCIe x2 and two keys.
Will the drive work? Will there be any restrictions?

Will work, but will be limited to x4 port speed.
