Because botnets and others like them make every effort to see the traffic between you and the server. And the speed with which your passwords will leak into a botnet that will use them automatically ruining your life is only a matter of time.
The main use of telnet is to debug/verify servers using text-based protocols such as SMTP, as well as to control embedded hardware in closed networks.
For work on telnet servers, it lost its relevance somewhere at the time of the advent of the Internet.

Because it's not safe.
There is no traffic encryption, logig/pw are transmitted in the clear.

The SSH protocol, unlike the Telnet protocol, is secure. All data is encrypted during transmission via SSH.
