Data center

Why is the server location a technical secret?

Why do many large IT companies keep the exact location of their servers a technical secret? For example, they say that somewhere in Eastern Europe, but they don’t name the data center specifically.

And some data centers are even guarded worse than military installations. And then, you know, some slippery Snowden will come and steal the disks from all the servers clean. Or the nimble Anna Chapman will infiltrate, steal and sell Assange and his associates, not to mention Tyler Durton with his shaved astronaut monkeys.

large IT companies

I think this is the key to the answer.
Most likely, in order to avoid any problems from intruders.

Many do not have a secret, in any case, if you rent places from $ 10K per month, they say where it is located and what Tier is built on, what traffic exchange points are present, pings to different countries, what hardware is installed in the turbine halls, etc. Just make your way through the FLS, of course, if you are the owner of a linga server on a VPS for $10 a year, no one will give you this information, maybe. there is a possibility that your server is in Uncle Vasya's basement for a bottle of port.

If you say so, you will believe. And if we later want to move the data center, you will start asking unnecessary questions, torturing technical support.
What if something big falls? Media immediately drive up to the data center?
Take a service, tracernet, look at it lookinglassom, determine, perhaps, in which country you are located)

You can calculate it in an elementary way: through ip geolocation, we determine the location of the server, then we drive it into Google: "city data center" and you're done, if there is one data center in the city.

in order not to harm the data center with massive ddos? from which other companies may suffer

There is no tightness, usually it is not possible to look at the ip where the DC is located up to the definition of the city.
