Why is italic not desirable on the web?

I heard more than once from people who claimed site layouts that the italic style on the web is fufufu. Why is that?

The typography rules for the web and for the "non-web" are the same. If the text is entirely in italics, then yes - fufufu. It's so hard to read.
If, as expected, italics is used to highlight individual words or phrases, then use it to your health.

Italics are worse perceived. Too thin it turns out - nothing is visible.
