Why is Clone Stamp not working?

When I try to use this tool, it throws an error:
Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (Alt-click to define a source point).
So what do they want from me? I heal Alt and click on the area I want to clone. It gives me this error again.

Check if you have an empty layer active. Then you need to select the layer with the image again, hold down the alt, click on the area that you will clone, return to the empty layer.
