Why external hdd western digital orders to live long?
I bought an external hdd, served for about a year. Hdd from wd, box branded 3Q.
Now, suddenly, when the box is connected to usb, Windows XP stops responding to commands, for a minute and a half. Then it freezes and provides access to the hdd.
I took it out of the box, connected it via sata - about the same, when loading for about a minute in front of the login screen, Windows thought and showed a black screen.
Is it possible to do something with it to restore normal operation?
It did not fall anywhere, I wore it maximum to another room.
If it has a lid - is this typical for an external hdd? I bought it for a weekly backup, it's very convenient, but if the reliability is low, then you have to come up with something else.

Nothing to watch yet - a waste of your time. Take it back to the seller with a check, let him return the money or replace it with a similar, but working one. He can refer to the trading rules, which allow him not to return the money, because. hard is a technically complex electronic device (or whatever the correct wording is...). Now, if he refuses to return the money or replace it, you should start “poking around” with the screw for the sake of academic interest. Valuable data (and even more so backups) I would not trust this instance. Most likely, he is a khan. There is a small chance that it will be possible to “repair” it by eliminating bad sectors. But, firstly, most likely the problems will start to come out again (someone dropped it or assembled it incorrectly or something else), and secondly,
A year for an external HDD is a normal lifespan. No, I understand that “but my screw has been working for 10 years and everything is fine”, but now even the warranty on the HDD is only a year or even less (in any case, my WD Green warranty is a year).
To get started, try running a live cd thread (Ubuntu for example) and test it in it. maybe it's a glitch with the system.
Search and fix errors on hdd using standard winxp tools
A year is not very normal, a year of warranty does not mean that it will work for only a year, there are just always instances that are not lucky.
In your case, it is unlikely that the matter is in sectors, it looks like mechanics.
For backups, it is better to use a full-sized HDD (but it is with an external power supply).
The only thing that can be done in this case is to update the firmware. Helped me with Samsung. If you yourself do not find a new firmware, then I can try.
