Why doesn't .localhost work?

I want to access sites on domains on a different ip.
Registered in hosts in Windows:
192.168.0.2 site.localhost
This works in firefox, but does not work in chrome.

ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

And .local already works in chrome. The story is clearly related to the .dev domain and Google taking it over. At that time it was proposed to use four others:
.test
.example
.invalid
.localhost

Cleaned all possible dns caches, history and so on. Proxies are disabled.
But it is clear that the problem is in the chrome itself. How to fix?

Chrome will probably resolve *.localhost to 127.0.0. 1 as intended , regardless of the settings in hosts.

There is also a completely legitimate TLD .lan. I use it successfully at home. local is usually assigned to mDNS.
