Why does the whole system freeze when opening an old forum?

Went to an old computer forum (early 2000s) with lots of interactive ads. I opened several tabs, the computer hung tightly, did not react either to closing chrome or to calling the terminal.
I switched to console mode (Ctrl-Alt-F1), logged in and out, chrome closed.

I opened the same site, only one tab, I wanted to wait until it loads. Also stuck.
What could be wrong with the old site because of which everything hangs tightly?

Maybe some crypto-miner or something else computationally heavy with JS scripts is being loaded.
May also consume a lot of memory.
Can be checked in htop/top.
