Why does my computer freeze when playing video in Windows XP?

Hi all.
I have been suffering with a strange problem for a long time: the computer freezes under Win XP only when playing video. And it doesn't matter how you look: it can be AVI under VLC Player, or maybe just Youtube under Mozilla Firefox. I also hung out on Youtube many times.
The freeze occurs instantly: the sound does not cycle, the image does not disappear, it just freezes and that's it. It does not react to anything, the mouse does not move, NUM lock does not switch, it is treated only by RESET. The freeze is not tied to the viewing duration: it can freeze after 5 minutes, or it can work normally for hours and not freeze at all.
I tried to change the video card with a neighboring computer: it does not help (but it works without problems on the neighboring one). Video cards are both simple for $25, PCI-E, one is ATI, the other is nVidia. I blew everything: the coolers work, the radiators are clean. Connectors also perevtykal. The temperature of the cores and video is normal. There is no feeling that is associated with overheating. I even put a cooler on the vidyuhi, the temperature dropped further, there was no effect.
What is connected with the video - 100%. Only when watching a video hangs. In general, the computer is turned on 24/7 and never hangs during work or at night. When playing music, it also never hangs. It is also obvious that the problem is hardware.
Proc Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz. 3GB RAM. Connected 2 monitors - via HDMI and SVGA. Audio external USB (M-Audio Transit).
Tell me, please, where to dig?
Thank you.
ps I would not like to hear advice "buy a new computer" or "put Win 8".

Try reinstalling video codecs, maybe they are the problem.

It is also obvious that the problem is hardware.
and the indication of Win XP does not fit. To finally get rid of the software, boot into Linux and check in it.
