Why can't wifi work on macbook air?

They gave me a dead poppy. With grief in half restored. I installed Lion 10.6.3 on it. Now wifi is not working. The Mac connects to the router, but there is no Internet, it shows an exclamation mark. Can anyone come across this?

In the lan clients of the router, the macbook is visible, and it receives an IP.
