Why 144 Hz monitors are sold at exorbitant prices?

My cable has a suitable bandwidth, the video card supports this mode, I set it to 120 Hz in the Nvidia settings - the monitor writes "non-optimal mode". What's the catch? What is the difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz monitors so much that the latter sell at three prices? The matrix is the same ... Why can't I just overclock the monitor I like to play shooters at my leisure with comfort (and in ordinary life, smoothness adds comfort to the eyes)?

A modern LCD monitor is not only a matrix, but also a microcontroller that decodes the HDMI signal into signals for each component of the matrix pixel.
To realize your desire, you need some stars to converge.
1. You have basic knowledge of a repairman. That is, you know how to work with a soldering station, you understand the process of flashing various types of microcircuits. You have a whole zoo of various programmers and software for them. You are guided in datasheets to microcircuits.
2. The manufacturer benevolently posted datasheets for microcircuits and the necessary firmware in the public domain. Moreover, the latter even in an uncompiled form, where you can fix the coveted 60 config at 120 or even at 144 Hz.
3. The manufacturer put a microcontroller "for growth" into the monitor. Binding it allows you to withstand higher bus frequencies, there are reserves for the memory buffer, etc.
4. If something does not pull a more productive config, then the manufacturer carefully left the key components of the circuit not immured inside the matrix, or not filled with plastic tightly, there are no obstacles for dismantling and replacing.
5. Any individual details of the monitor circuit are easily searched on ebay or taobao, there are even more productive analogues.
In general, in order to be able to change the properties of the monitor, it is necessary that steps 1-5 be performed. But you understand that this is practically a fairy tale.
