System administration
Ivan Nikolaevich, 2014-11-11 18:22:37

Who in your web studio is in charge of server administration and why?

In large companies, most often this is a separate system administrator and technical department.
And in small companies with a staff of 15-25 people, with several servers, who does this?
Options:
- System admin - freelancer. We think about it and understand that even though 1 can fumble and solve problems, you still don’t want to depend on him-> go on vacation, disappear somewhere.
- Programmers, this is practically the case now, but there is not enough competence to solve even more complex tasks on servers, we still understand that this is our own industry and we need the work of a professional. We don’t see the point of taking on a staff, because the work of a qualified specialist will be scrapped part-time.
- External outsourcing company. There is a fear of granting access and giving something very valuable for business into the wrong hands.

It is better to be a freelancer who works in pairs or in a team, this completely eliminates the risks of going on vacation or dying.

Programmers are bad. This is not their speciality.
The office will be bad not because something can go away, nevertheless contracts are signed and nothing will go anywhere at a decent office if they administer your servers. The office will be bad for the price, you will pay as much as a live admin.
How many servers is it? What is their role? Why do you think that you have few tasks for one admin? If you are a web studio, then the admin's job is not only to install a web server for you and update the servers, but also monitoring, but also finding bottlenecks and so on.
As an option, think about the option of a third-party admin, good documentation and one or two programmers who read this documentation and can insure him if a brick flies on his head. This is me, as an admin looking for a part-time job, I advise you (there should be a winking emoticon, but the rules of the resource prohibit it).
In fact, even if you remove my postscript at the end, discard it. If it seems to you that there is not enough load for a whole admin, but you are afraid to take a conditional freelancer, then think about the fact that your programmers can duplicate him in case of problems if everything is well documented.
