Which monitor is better for a developer, 4K or 1440p?

After a year of working on a Macbook Pro 13'' (old, not retina) with PPI ~ 110, it became terribly unusual for me to work on an old monitor with 92 PPI, so I choose a monitor for my desktop so that the pixels do not hurt my eyes. Two main competitors in my workplace: DELL U2515H (1440p, ~123 PPI) and Samsung U24E590D (4K, 187 PPI). At first, Samsung was the undisputed contender because I decided "the more pixels, the more beautiful the text", but my acquaintances begin to dissuade me, citing the fact that many sites and applications simply cannot be seen at 4K, because they are not scaled. I have never used 4K myself. On the other hand, the owners of Macbooks with retina do not suffer, everything has the correct size, nothing is manually scaled.
In general, the opinion of developers who worked in 4K is interesting: on which monitor the text looks nicer, without pixels, is it true that at 4K each site has to be scaled with Ctrl-+, otherwise you can’t see anything (my vision is so-so).
Once again: I'm only interested in working with text: development and a little reading. Intellij IDEA, Terminal, Github and Stackoverflow hang in the foreground 95% of my time. And I don't want anything bigger than 27''. And I don’t need a workspace for panels, I work in zen mode, nothing but code.

The answer depends mainly on the operating system.
If it qualitatively supports the ppi setting over a wide range - of course you need to take 4K.
And of course, no one in their right mind would use a 4K monitor at a logical resolution equal to the native physical one.
At the moment (as far as I know, but I could be wrong) there are two such suitable axes - makos and win10.
If something else is used and an upgrade is not planned in the near future, it is better to save money and buy 1440.

LCD 17'' ))))))) for the code is almost perfect)
It's worth it for me. Two monitors: LCD 17 for code, and 1440 for visual viewing)
In fact, I don’t know why 4K is so praised, I worked on it, I don’t want to anymore.
It's good to watch movies or build games on it, but it's not very good for code.

I've been using Dell P2415Q (23.8", 3840×2160) for almost a year now, with KDE 5, no problems at all. Read applications only scale incorrectly.
