Which mac mini to buy 2012 (MD388xx) or 2014 (MGEN2xx)?
I am faced with the choice of which model to buy, they write that the updated model is weaker than 2012 by half (they also write on the fence).
I take it for coding software (I have not encountered minis).
Are there any users who have upgraded and have a specific experience?
Thanks

For coding there will be no difference, take any. Honestly, the old 4-core processor in the minicar only makes sense for very very demanding tasks.
But this is a very good question. As the owner of a mini 2011, and a person who has been waiting for a new model for several years, I have formed a definite opinion on this matter.
The 3 main disadvantages of the new mini are:
1. You can't insert a second disk
2. You can't upgrade the memory.
3. Dual core maximum
Both are very critical. For example, I'm not ready to give up my second disc. I have a 256 SSD system and a 1Tb HDD data. It's comfortable. If there is only one disk, then I need at least a terobyte, and after the SSD there are no options for me to start working on the HDD again. A 1TB SSD on the Apple website is + $ 800.
As for memory, I will say that 4 is clearly not enough. You need at least 8. Upgrading to 8 will cost $100 and to 16 + another $200 (and that's $300).
Well, percent. The most powerful I can get is a 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7. Only 2 cores. No 4 cores. And for that you have to add $300.
And if you take a normal copy with an i7 processor and 16 GB of memory, it will be $ 1,400. And this is serious money.
So my answer is this. If it's not a problem for you to spend $1,500 on this business, then you can take a mini 2014 (but the second disk will still be a limitation)
Otherwise, I would advise you to take a 2012 quad-core i7.
Personally, I had just such a plan. But upgrading from one 2011 to another 2012 doesn't do much. So I'm in no hurry.
Here is a CPU comparison

As you can see, the Mac Mini 2012 processor has better performance than the 2014 processor simply because it is 4-core versus 2-core, although it is generation 3 versus generation 4.
The most important question is where did you see the MD388 for sale?
Didn't find what you were looking for?
