Which is better: +4GB RAM or +8GB RAM?

Good afternoon!

I would like to know which option is best to choose in terms of performance and efficiency? (4 GB of RAM are soldered on the motherboard)
1) put 4 GB of RAM and as a result you get 8 GB of RAM;

2) put 8 GB of RAM and eventually get 12 GB of RAM.

Asus x540u laptop, Intel i3-7020U processor.

+8 for sure. 8 gigabytes is now sometimes not enough ...
A small possible drawdown in performance cannot be compared with the pain from a lack of memory.
UPD.
In the comments, it turned out that the HDD was installed and not the SSD.
Upgrading to an SSD can add even more comfort than increasing memory. Especially if it works right now.

And 8 is not enough and 12.
Clearly 12 is better than 8.

biilbo , 8 GB for a laptop "for the eyes". Don't spend extra money. You, most likely, will never completely occupy 8 GB, and even more so 12. Better invest in a better SSD.
