Engine oil lubricates well, but is very thin (low viscosity). Gear oil should be better, it is thicker.
High-temperature - you turned it down, at a temperature of more than 100 degrees, not a single computer will work for more than a few minutes without freezing. And below 100 degrees, any lubricants work (not high-temperature ones).
I agree with the idea of a replacement. If the fan is dry, then new grease will be squeezed out of it. It's only a matter of time.
