Which forum to choose for a Joomla site?

There is an informational Joomla site (1.7), you need to run a forum.
Need basic forum functionality (users, admins, moderators, comment notifications, etc.). The engine should be free and not buggy :)
The options, as far as I understand, are:
- A forum based on Joomla CMS
- A separate forum (for example, phpBB)
Tell me a personally verified solution!

Do such people exist?
If I were you, I would use phpBB + Bridge

Personally used Kuena . Was completely satisfied.

Kenena is not bad if you need to synchronize, for example, with the Community Builder.
And so a good version of phpBB (you can also make a bunch through the bridge).

IMHO linking with phpbb via a bridge would be the best solution. Kunena is good if you bring it to mind.

If you don't need fancy stuff but only a base, then you can use Cobalt 7 CCK to create a forum. With this approach, you will have to work harder, as you will need to work with templates so that the created section looks like a forum. But there are also advantages.
For example, that you can create a topic with additional fields on the topic. Topics can be added to bookmarks. Follow topics and receive notifications on the site.
And all of the above functionality is there and even more.
But it's still, of course, what phpBB or kunena is. Although it doesn't look bad. At Kurteev Alexander the forum is made so.
