Some images require that the device with them be recognized as a "USB Removable Disk" (flash drive).
Are there such HDD/SSD boxes on the market?
Zalman VE-350 can be HDD, VCD, Dual mode.

USB-HDD as a flash drive
It was discussed here. But the solution is only for windows. Not suitable for cases where you need to install the system/image from DOS.
