Considering which operation the error occurs on, I would assume problems with the file system.
First, copy any important files to a known-good media. If something important is not copied, then the task turns into data recovery. In this case, it is better to stop and think before following the recommendations below.
Then run from the command line chkdsk X: /Vwhere X is your drive letter. It is not necessary to fix errors yet, checkdisk can shred the data. Look at the result.
Depending on the presence of errors or their absence, then you need to either find out the reason for their appearance, or understand what is wrong with the disk.
To do this, download the program for checking hard drivesand run tests on it. If you have copied everything important, or there is no important data on the disk (because it is new), you can also run a write test over the entire surface (destroy the data), and then a read test. This "tandem" will be a good check of the HDD condition.
In addition, pay attention to whether the drive receives enough power via USB. I have seen cases when an external drive that did not have enough power from a laptop considered bad sectors that it was working with at the time of the shortage.
