If your infrastructure is from one vendor, then you should look at a solution from it, such as HP Insight Remote Support or IBM Remote Support Manager. On the plus side: a more serious analysis of problems (the number of the required spare part and a list of actions to fix the problem), more accurate diagnostics, as well as automatic opening of a service case in vendor systems.

And what is there to communicate - form the requirements for the monitoring system and choose free or paid analogues. Nagios, cacti, zabbix, zenoss, munin, mrtg, prtg.

Purely IMHO, but the question itself is very strange. Why not ask more specific questions and discuss their solution in each topic. For example, I have been working with databases for many years and could share my experience specifically in monitoring database activity, although to be honest, you hardly need it, since this type of monitoring is tied to a specific database and a specific architectural solution, and in each case is developed individually, and the only thing that can be common to all DBMS is

There are highly qualified users on Habré, so the UFO link can easily serve as an answer to the question posed, it all depends.
