Where can I find ideas for an OpenSource project?

Where can I find ideas for developing in-demand programs?
It seems very strange to me that there are many notepads, file managers and other things. At the same time, I often notice in various sources (forums, instant messengers, social networks) a request - "what should I write?". There are a lot of projects that are created for fun and training of the mind, training in the elegance and complexity of writing code, like rarely used really new programming languages, such as Brainfuck.
There are some "niches" in which only paid software. Moreover, this is not a particularly complex software. But due to the specifics, those who could take part in the development of this are not aware of them. And those who need it don't know how to say it...

If you often meet questions "What to write" on the forums, this does not mean that the people who ask them are able to write something. Rather the opposite.
There are already all sorts of kickstarters on the net. where people look for funding for their projects, and there is also a github where people can get together to work on an open source project and work.
If there is no well-known site that introduces developers and users, allowing them to communicate, then this just means. that they have nothing to talk about.
There are a lot of people on the planet and everyone needs a hundred to one degree or another. There are a lot of ideas, paid and free products of different quality are also full, but people who don’t care what to write at all, and for free, apparently, one, two, and counted. They will not be typed on a whole social network.
And what's the problem? Here is Photoshop - paid and not cheap, but there is a considerable pile of "free analogues of Photoshop." Probably the most famous one is Gimp. Does anyone need a good graphics editor - certainly. Are there many such people? Highly! Are there any open source projects in this area? Great amount!
But their quality is so-so, although many are quite usable and in many ways are able to replace good paid counterparts.
Have you heard the expression "Shine and poverty of penorosa"? That's better not to say. A huge number of man-hours of work of enthusiasts and full-time programmers sitting on their salaries write a very large amount of open source. You can sit down and write any project. There is no shortage of projects and ideas. Just take and write any open project from github, or any analogue of the popular paid one. Both of those are in abundance!
Why make a social network that gives that. what and so in bulk? Nobody needs her.
Yes, if you need project ideas, then formulate the question that way. A huge number of people are ready to share their ideas. There are a lot of ideas, without implementation they are not worth a penny, and there won’t be enough to implement them for all the projects of life, so I don’t understand at all why people are “afraid to tell their ideas so that they are not stolen”.
For example, I am always happy to share my ideas. which have accumulated quite a few. I do not have enough resources to implement them all. so if someone “steals” one of them, I will only be glad, because if you are lucky and the “thief” is not just a balabol, but can really do something, then I will be able to use my embodied ideas during my lifetime. Ideas usually lie within the interests of their authors. which means the author would not refuse to use their incarnations.
So what's the point of hiding ideas. if it's better to share them?
In general, come for ideas, tell us what is interesting - we will distribute it.

You go to a freelance exchange, any.
You look at what people order from the software.
And you make it open source.
Profit.

It seems very strange to me that there are many notepads, file managers and other things.

There is nothing strange here. It's just that such projects affect a vast area of practical knowledge. Why is ToDoList popular? Here you are invited to learn how to use the UI, data storage, updating data (CRUD) and synchronizing them with the interface.
file manager? The same, plus work with the file system. Etc.
For learning, that's it.
As for demand, there is no such list . Well, just no. The most popular open source solutions are those that were written "for themselves" and then made available to the public. This is not about all of course, but, for sure, the majority.
So if you need an idea, look for it in yourself. What you need?

I don’t have an answer to the question, but the question itself can be expanded: is there a more or less complete software base with categories, tags, filters, ratings, etc.? Something like imdb.com, but not for movies, but for software?
Will be comfortable. There is a new task - I went in, filtered, you immediately see the best solutions in this area. Paid/free, proven/new, popular/specialized,...
Optionally, you can show projects on github in this area, and allow users to leave applications for functionality (and for new software in this category), donate for the implementation of features, etc.
You can fill it according to the principle of a wiki, or as an option, parse articles like "Top 10 programs for 3D design" ...
Who was looking for an idea there?))
