First, you need to study everything. And then they come to the project having no idea about compatibility and so on.

Personally, I took freelance orders and a mentor (a less experienced freelancer) told me how to communicate with a client and all that, how to warn myself against bad customers and stuff like that. Also helped in the correct writing of the code. I recommend as such any free-time web developer. And + courses like WebDesignMaster - course "I'm a freelancer".
