When connecting a SATA drive, the computer hangs on POST. What could be the problem?
For a long time I have an incomprehensible problem with one disk (WD Green 2TB). After resetting the BIOS (when installing new hardware), the computer can not boot for a long time. I go through the parameters (which are not too many), and at some point the download occurs, after which everything works fine until the next installation of a new piece of hardware or a BIOS reset. But the last time something just doesn't work. The computer either reaches the lines "press del to enter the menu", or hangs on a black screen after this inscription. In a normal situation, lines about the found devices should appear below (if this disk is pulled out). At the same time, the problem is not in the power supply, the power remains on it when I pull out the SATA cable, and everything works. Yesterday I managed to boot by connecting the drive to an incomprehensible PCI controller with IDE and SATA, on which SATA drives have been working for me for a long time, and now the IDE hangs for a couple of years. True, when loading Windows 7, it was clear how long the PCI controller polled the disk, but the download went through and it even worked. However, the next day, the computer began to hang and reboot under the same conditions. It is reasonable to assume that the problem is with the disk, but there was a similar story almost from the moment of purchase, and for a long time (for example, for six months or a year between getting into the computer) it worked perfectly fine and allowed it to boot, and SMART did not show anything terrible. Problems were only with changes in the BIOS. Maybe there were similar situations, where to dig (if there is no way to connect to another computer yet)? What does SMART show anyway?
Contacts on the controller board facing the HDA can be checked/cleaned.
Replace loop.
Perhaps the south bridge / hub is dying, but this is rare.
