What topic to choose for the diploma (network)?

The question arose about choosing a topic for the diploma. The supervisor suggests looking in the direction of network monitoring. I'm more interested in dlp systems myself. I really want to do something of my own, or introduce some new solution, without reinventing the wheel. As a student, there is a catastrophic lack of practical experience. Tell me, is there perhaps some new developing direction or promising technology in which one could write a diploma?

What exactly does your degree entail? Development or deployment? These are fundamentally different things.
