What to do if the Mac itself turns off the sound?

From time to time, for no apparent reason, the sound disappears. I go into the sound settings, and there, by itself, a tick is placed on "turn off the sound."

on this version, I had a bug when the sound balance slider went all the way to the left, most likely in the version
