What software and operating system to choose for a home PC server in a mac os environment?

There is a PC that I want to turn into a home server , a file cleaner. What operating system to choose and what software is needed to use the server to the maximum only in a Mac os x environment ? (I mean such chips as Time Machine, etc.)
