What functionality is available in this mode, and why is it disabled by default? Can Victoria in PIO mode detect a completely dead disk that even the BIOS does not see?

What is the feature of PIO mode

We have specialized tools, so we do not use Victoria, but from conversations with Sergey Kazansky I remember that he positioned the PIO mode as an option for experiments and limited repair attempts. This mode is an attempt to avoid Windows drivers interfering with your work with the disk. in the case of experiments, they can have an unnecessary impact, and in the case of working with half-dead drives, the Windows API will simply finish them off.
to detect a completely dead disk that even the BIOS does not see?

I may not remember the details exactly, but at the time when we talked about all this, it was necessary to first switch the disk access mode from ACHI to Legacy in the BIOS. And you can't do it.
By the way, in those days there definitely wasn’t, at least, Windows 10. If you have it, then it’s not clear whether you can get PIO at all.
And in general, I believe that in your case, any "custom" software is unlikely to help at all.
But just in case, you can additionally try R.tester: https://rlab.ru/tools/rtester.html
This is a similar program for checking disks, but written differently to a certain extent, and taking into account what we think , should have been improved in other utilities.
It is also free and works without installation.
PS
By the way, if you are trying to do something with the hard drive, because. If you want to recover data, then it’s better to finish and don’t even turn it on. The current situation is unclear, and you can always finish off the drive. In this case, it is better to find a specialist in your area and go to him for a diagnosis. It's free for the right ones.
