How is SLI on Windows 10?

I want to buy a GTX 1060 or 970 SLI graphics card. What about SLI in DirectX 12 ? Is the video memory really merged ? Will there be a significant increase over 1060 ? In any case, for now I plan to take one 970, and then I will put another one in a new system (if I take the GTX 970).
