What is the best way to connect an external monitor to a macbook pro retina?

Available macbook pro retina 2015 and Samsung EX2220
When trying to connect to monitor via thunderbolt > VGA maximum resolution is 1280x800 and creepy colors. Is there a way to make the monitor work correctly, maybe using other ports? Thank you.

Why connect it via vga? thunderbolt -> dvi.
