What do you need to know to create a game?

Foreword:
I am a composer (read "humanities") and have nothing to do with game development, from the word "generally".
What is there at the moment?
Purpose: to create a game in order to present it as your musical portfolio.
Plot: understanding where the story will begin and how it will end, as well as filling the space from start to finish
Genre: movement simulator (walking, flying, swimming)
Setting: teslapunk
Monetization: financial benefits from sales are not interested. Interested in those proposals that may come after it.
All ideas are written on paper and will be translated into an understandable, mentally stable person, plot prototype in the form of a decision tree.
Questions for connoisseurs:
Engine: Initially, my eyes fell on Unity, but after reading a couple of hundred articles, I decided to stop at Unreal Engine 4, as it seemed more intuitive and the community, to my surprise, it has more. Has the right choice been made?
Programming: is it possible to implement scripted 3D in the first person without code, from which I am far away from Zhytomyr from Beijing?
Creating objects: Blender is listed in all the tops, because it's free, but I'm interested in ease of entry and intuitiveness. What do you recommend?
And the most important question: where to start with all this?

And the most important question: where to start with all this?

If there is no 3 years for training, only freelancing.
Like it or not, gamedev is not just one technology, but a whole stack. Here and 3d modeling and programming and knowledge of game engines, knowledge of the features of the platform for which you are developing. And two more cars of less obvious skills and knowledge.
So if you want to retrain - go ahead, there are a bunch of manuals on the Internet. And if you are trying to save money by doing it yourself, this is a very wrong idea. As a result, there will be no time, no money, no product. Just find a specialist, he will do it (it's always cheaper than doing it yourself).

Most solo developers are either programmers who know how to work with graphics, or artists who know how to script a little. Among musicians, indie developers are very rare, only David Kanaga, who made Panoramical and Proteus , immediately comes to mind .
The main problem is that games are not made without programming, it can be visual, but this does not change the essence of the matter, it is still programming. Even if you take a ready-made engine, even if you already know how to program, there is still a fair amount of knowledge and skills in game development that you need to master before you can even make something as simple as Tetris. This, of course, does not mean that it is impossible to enter the industry from scratch, it just takes a long time to put all the information in your head.
Given all this, I can offer a couple of options. The first option is to take the finished game and voice it. For example, Linux is full of silent open source games, you can offer your services, no one will refuse. Or find some developer on TIGSourceand talk to him.
The second option is to forget about the graphics and take Twine , but you need to advertise your music, and not success in modeling. Take some ready-made short story and translate it into an interactive format with music, a kind of radio play for the browser. If you really want, you can also find an artist for illustrations. It will look decent and it will be easier to show your work.

In your situation, I would not bother with the development of the game. I would order some freelancer animation (video) for your story. In this video, I would use my own sound. For clarity, I would indicate in the subtitles what kind of sound is heard right now.

There are only 2 ways:
1. Create your own engine 2. Learn to use ready-made Unreal
, Unity, etc. If you write your own, you need to be able to program
in C / C ++ no way, also geometry-trigonometry and 3D max are needed, + photoshop for texturing. You have to be a guru to figure things out on your own.
So it was necessary to put the question at the very top! You have to start regardless of the engines, and so on. You need to start with an elementary game, for example, a circle rolls around the screen, and you need to press the space bar to dodge obstacles, or like an easter egg in Flappy Bird android
For complex games, this is very difficult, in addition to sound and music, you also need to be a designer, understand color correction , and much more. It will not work to take any objects and resources, throwing them into some kind of virtual world at random without programming. We need a good team.
