What do www, *, and @ mean in an A record type name when setting up DNS?

There is a lot of information on the Internet about how to change DNS, but I did not find information about what these characters mean.
For example,
www A 144.76.217.162
* A 144.76.217.162
@ A 144.76.217.162
=======================
If I understood correctly, then the @ symbol is responsible for mail forwarding?
If I specify *, will mail be sent to this IP address or where @ stands?
Thank you.

@Quber

If, for example, for the mydomain.com domain, then
www is an entry for the www.mydomain.com subdomain,
* - an entry for all other (not explicitly defined) subdomains of the third and lower levels of the mydomain.com domain
@ - an entry for the mydomain domain itself .com
for mail uses the MX (not A) record type, for example:
@MX 144.76.217.162
