Domain is registered in DHCP settings: workgroup.local and static addresses with host names. In dd-wrt, this was enough for DNS to give their IP addresses. It doesn't work here in OpenWRT. Moreover, the /etc/hosts file is not automatically added to it when it is empty.

It seems that /etc/hosts is generally a file for manual editing; there no demon automatically writes anything.
And what prevents you from adding the path to the desired file in the config dnsmasq as the line list addnhosts '/path/to/file'? It will be loaded and used instead of /etc/hosts
